At Freedom Academy Charter School we have started Student Council!!



What is student council?



The National Association of Student Council says the following about student councils:



"Engaged student councils can be a principal's best ally. They can help push reforms that will benefit students; they can develop strategies in answer to student concerns that will help improve school climate. Let them be one of your partners."—NASSP "



…Student Council … [provides] an excellent opportunity for the school to be a laboratory of practice in democracy in which the school is the community of operation. It must be an essential part of the overall school program."--NASSP Bulletin, October, 1944, p. 21.



 

The student council at Freedom Academy will….

*Give input about school policies

*Plan special events and fundraisers

*Fundraising for student activities

*Support students

*Give the student body a “voice”

Who can be a student council member?
 

SWAG members with a GPA of at least 3.0.
 

What is the structure of student council?
 

Elections will take place in September 2011.
 

There will be up to five students nominated from each grade.

After elections there will be 17 total Student Council members for the Executive Council
 

Executive Council

(President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary)

1 -  5th Grade Adviser

1  -  6th Grade Adviser

3  - Students from 8th Grade

3  -  Students from 7th Grade

3  -  Students from 6th Grade

2  -  Students from 5th Grade

Once the council has been created, nominations for Secretary and Treasurer will take place among the members.
